SENDING FRESH TROOPS

To Reinforce MacArthur and Lawton.

THE DEWEY OF THE ARMY

Capt. Grant of Utah to Command River Gunboats.

MANILA, May 12.—Fresh troops are beginning to go to the front. Two battalions of the seventeenth infantry regulars, who have been holding the lines about Manila, will join Gen. MacArthur at San Fernando tomorrow, and a battalion of the same will reinforce Gen. Lawton near Bacolor. The twenty-first infantry arrived yesterday on the Hancock and will replace these troops near Manila. Capt. Grant of the Utah battery, whose success in managing the army gunboats won for him the sobriquet of Dewey of the army, has been put in command of the recently purchased Spanish gunboats for operations on rivers and coast.
