In confirmation of what we published on Saturday last, of an engagement having taken place between the French and Prussians, we are informed, that an officer belonging to one of the British frigates now in Hampton Roads a few days ago boarded an American vessel from Hamburg to Philadelphia, out 50 days, the Captain of which said, that it was currently reported there at the time of his sailing (about the 19th October) that a severe engagement had taken place between the Prussians and French, in which the latter were defeated—and that Hanover was immediately to be restored to Great Britain. We very much doubt the truth of these reports, as by an arrival at Boston from Rotterdam, which brings Dutch papers to the 17th of October, nothing is said of an engagement; but that negotiations of pacific nature were still going on between France and Prussia.
An arrival at Charleston from Hamburg, has brought another account of the rumor in circulation, among the coffee houses at Hamburg, of the defeat of the French by the Prussians, with the addition of the loss of twenty thousand men, sustained by the French!!
