Breaux Bridge Dec. 4th 1887.
Pursuant to call of the Democratic Parish Executive Committee of the Parish of St. Martin, dated Nov. 6th. A. D. 1887, and duly published in the two Journals of this parish the Democrats in mass meeting assembled, this day for the purpose of choosing and electing six delegates to represent the parish of St. Martin, in the State Democratic Convention to be holden at Baton Rouge on the 10th. of January 1888 for the nomination of candidates for governor and other State officers, and to re-organize the Parish Executive Committee and appoint a delegate from this parish to the State Central Executive Committee.
At 12 o'clock m. sharp. Jules S. Broussard, president of the Parish Executive Committee called the meeting to order and on suggestions made it having been unanimously resolved that the Hall was too small to contain the people in attendance, the President announced that the meeting and proceedings would be holden outside in the open air in front of the Hall.
Whereupon all those present having assembled in mass meeting. On motion of A. V. Fournet duly seconded, Robert Martin was unanimously chosen and elected president of the Assembly.
On motion duly seconded it was unanimously resolved that for the purpose of facilitating the voting and in order to more easily and correctly ascertain the number of votes cast for each respective candidate that all persons favoring the selection and nomination of a Nicholls delegation stand in ranks to the left and all those favoring the selection and nomination of a McEnery delegation stand likewise to the right, which was accordingly done.
Whereupon Dr. F. R. Martin and T. L. Broussard the chosen tellers proceeded in said order to take each individual vote cast for each of said delegations or candidate and after having duly compiled said vote, made the following report of the total number of votes cast to wit:
For a Nicholls delegation 316.
For a McEnery delegation 323.
Which said report was duly announced to the assembly by the president.
On motion of Cyprien Guidry duly seconded the following persons were unanimously chosen and appointed as delegates to the State Nominating Convention to be held at Baton Rouge on January 10th. 1888 viz: Arcade Patin, Albert Donengeaux, Alcide Dupre, Leonard Savoie, T. L. Broussard and Charles Gutekunst with instructions to vote as a unit for Samuel D. McEnery, as our choice for candidate as Governor at the coming elections.
On motion of A. Fournet duly seconded it is resolved that the selection of the aforenamed delegates be and are hereby made unanimous.
On motion of T. L. Broussard, duly seconded it was resolved that the following named persons are unanimously chosen to compose the Parish Democratic Executive Committee viz:
1st. Ward. R. Martin, A. V. Fleming, Felix Berard, C. M. Olivier, Carlos Groig.
2nd. Ward. Chas. Gutekunst, S. Smith, Chas. Waterhouse, Chas. Larson, John Crawford.
3rd. Ward. Auguste Barras, Arcade Gauthier, L. P. Fournet, Numa Cormier, Martin Ducrest.
4th. Ward. Jules S. Broussard, Gabrielle Castille, Leonard Savoie, Joseph A. Patin, Omer Martin.
5th. Ward. A. A. Dupre, J. B. Angelle, L. C. Guidry, W. D. Talley, Paulin Latiolais.
At Large, Dr. H. P. Guilbeau, James Calais.
On motion of James E. Mouton, duly seconded Jules Rousseau, is hereby unanimously selected and appointed as delegate from this parish to the State Central Executive Committee.
On motion duly seconded the meeting was adjourned.
