SALEM, August 1.

Admiral Pigot, from England, arrived in the West Indies about a month since, to take upon him the command of the British fleet in those seas.

Captain Gage, of Beverly, passenger on board a vessel which arrived at Newbury-Port a few days since, informs, that he left Cape François on the 7th ult. and that 4 days before, a French squadron, of 14 ships of the line, with a number of frigates, sailed from thence for this continent. A Spanish squadron, consisting of the like number of capital ships, took their departure from the Cape at the same time, bound for the Havana.
