Man Slain Over Debt

Grady William Jones, 27, died Friday night with the blade of a boy scout knife in his heart. His admitted killer said he stabbed him over a three-dollar whiskey debt, detectives reported.

The slain man, resident of 615 Reed St., S. E., died about 7:30 p. m., with a punctured heart, Dets. Howard Baugh and Ernest Lyons reported.

Police said they arrested Charlie Lewis Redding, 37, 124 Odd Fellows Place, S. E., on suspicion of murder. Redding admitted the slaying and surrendered the murder weapon after several witnesses named him as the guilty party, police said.

They quoted Redding as saying he and Jones bought a half gallon of whiskey two weeks ago for $3.00 and the victim still owed him $1.50, or his half of the debt. Police said the debt was the reason for the slaying.
