CONVERSION OF AN INFIDEL.--Dr. Cervera, a red republican infidel member of the Spanish Parliament, scandalized the nation about three weeks ago by proclaiming himself a materialist, in full Cortes. He had never been able to discover the human soul that others prated so much about, in any autopsy he had ever practised: and if the Bishop of Jaen, he continued, was then in his seat in the Cortes, he would soon convince him of the non-existence of any spiritual substance in man. A day or two after his Materialist boast, the good doctor fell ill, and his case became so dangerous, that--having happily found out in time, without the aid of his scalpel, the real existence of his immortal soul, he sent off at once for the Bishop of Jaen, and with every sign of sincere repentance made a general confession to his Lordship; authorizing him, moreover, it is said, to announce his retraction and repentance to the Cortes. Same evening the doctor breathed his last. --London Tablet.
