What the Battle of Chattanooga Accomplished---The States of Alabama and Mississippi Cleared of Troops.
Few of the gallant heroes, who, on the 25th of November last, witnessed the discomfiture of Bragg's army, from the summit of Missionary Ridge, had even a faint conception of the magnitude of their achievement; they saw the rebels flying in confusion, and contemplated with that satisfaction which the noble alone can feel, the many substantial trophies left upon the battle field; but it is doubtful if even the commander himself really believed that the victory thus won, would result in the destruction of the military power of the rebellion in all the territory lying between the Pearl and Chattahoochee rivers. Yet such is the fact, as is evinced by witnesses upon whose testimony the most implicit reliance can be placed. With the exception, then, of some cavalry, and a few roving bands of guerrillas, whose chief business is to enforce the sweeping conscription adopted by the rebel Government, and gather supplies from a starving community, and who can, and will be disposed of within the next two months, or we mistake the signs in the military horizon.
It is not often that victory won with a comparatively small loss of life has resulted in the destruction of a military power over one hundred thousand square miles of territory; and the country can never too highly magnify the achievements of those who stormed and carried Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, and who isolated Longstreet, and compelled the evacuation of Alabama and Mississippi, to protect Atlanta--all at a single blow--or rather, by a rapid series of blows--with but a momentary interval between them. There is no parallel for this in history; no example, even in the days of the French Revolution, fraught as that era was with startling events. The American soldier can well congratulate himself that he is making history.
