Students Visit
An Office

Each member of the Office Practice Class of Lanier High School visited an office for a day. This class, under the supervision of Mr. Z. Q. Turner, planned this project for the purpose of actually finding out for themselves what goes on in an office and what will be required of them as potential secretaries.

The students had as their objectives the following: To learn from actual experience what skills and personality traits are demanded by business: To gain poise and self-confidence for job-hunting; To observe the importance good personality and appearance play in securing and holding a job; To learn to appreciate more the importance of skill in shorthand and typing, as well as correct business English and spelling.

During this visit the students were particularly interested in observing the following: location and general appearance of the office; general appearance of the secretary visited and her co-workers; atmosphere of the office; appearance and manner of the employer; relationship between employer and secretary; daily routine of the secretary; office policies; working conditions, mannerisms of the boss.

The following students visited an office for a day: Mary D. Burnett, Delores Gaylor, Barbara Harris, Odessa Hinds, Betty J. Lewis, Kay Frances McAfee, Mary Norman, Shirley Ann Overstreet, Geneva Sayles, Carrie Smith, Clara C. Smith, Rubie Taylor, Essie J. Tucker, Geraldine Williams, Magnolia Williams, Emma Woodruff, and C. Charles Garrett.

The offices visited were: Peoples Funeral Home, Knox and Wells, Security Life Insurance Co., Universal Life, Enterprise Funeral Home, Collins Funeral Home, WOKJ Radio Station, YWCA, and the following offices at Jackson State College; Business Office, Registrar's Office, Library, Vocational Shop, Health Center.

Each student was required to give a written and an oral report of their visit after returning to class.
