POETRY.
The following capital song from the pen of WM. Haydex, Esq., was sung recently at a meeting of the Roxbury Mass., Whig Association:-
WHIG SONG.
I'll sing you a new Whig Song made to a good old tune,
Of a fine true-hearted gentleman, all of the olden time;
By birth and blood, by kith and kin, a sound true Whig was he*
For his father signed the Charter that made our country free:-
Like a fine true-hearted gentleman,
All of the olden time.
In youth, upon the tented field, his laurels he did gain-
With Wayne he fought some battles, and never fought in vain;
In peace, the quiet Statesman—but when the din of War arose,
He buckled on his armor to meet his country's foes:
Like a fine true-hearted gentleman,
All of the olden time.
And when he'd served his country well, in Senate and in field,
The honor that awaited him in age frankly did he yield:
His country called him to her helm again, and sought a firmer hold
Lo! he
For though he'd filled the office, he never took the spoil:
Like a fine true-hearted gentleman,
All of the olden time.
And when the People, in their might, have put their solemn ban
Upon the arch demagogue and all his Tory clan-
To manage us their State affairs, with 'good discord they'll tend,
Like another Cincinnatus, for the Hero of North Bend.
Like a true true-hearted gentleman,
All of the olden time.
Let every sound true-hearted Whig now raise his voice on high,
And for the triumph of the cause, join Freedom's loudest cry:
We'll to the fight! We'll win the field: Away with doubts and fears!
The Potter's field is Hanover—let's give him three good cheers!"
Like a fine true-hearted gentleman,
All of the olden time.
