OUR VETERANS HOME.
The order has been promulgated giving our brave veterans the privilege to return to their homes and the peaceful pursuits of private life. And by virtue of this order thousands have left the fields of their late bravery, whereon they displayed such gallant heroism and daring, for their homes in the different States. The cars and engines of the various railroad lines over which they had to travel, have been busy for a week past in transporting them to the places of their destination; and, it was a glorious sight to see these brave fellows, with their hands and faces browned with toil, and their muscular strength increased by the hardships, of the campaigns through which they passed, standing erect in the majesty of their greatness, the heroic defenders of our National honor and flag. Having accomplished their mission they now have come home, with the honors of the land, and the wreaths of peace upon their brows. For the past four years they have stood like a flint with their faces to the foe—they have met the flower of the rebel army in the shock of battle and came off victorious—Their lives have been a living commentary on the power of our military arms, and their devotion to country has elucidated a greater principle than was ever evolved by any other age or nation. In after years their deeds will be recounted in classic story, and when their children become grandfathers they will take pleasure in rehearsing the deeds and adventures of their fathers to those who are growing up around them. A great deed can never die; therefore is it that the noble works which our brave soldiers have accomplished will live in storied immortality in the hearts of future generations.
