Political Mass Meeting Planned By Dade County LLPE Prior To Primary; Typographers Endorse Towle

WITH A QUORUM OF DELEGATES PRESENT to a man, Labor's League For Political Education on Monday night in the Electricians Building voted unanimously to sponsor a Political Mass Meeting at an unspecified date prior to the primary election, scheduled November 15, in the auditorium of the electricians structure, Northwest 17th Avenue and 16th Terrace.

Although a number of Miami and Hialeah candidates spoke at the opening of Monday's meeting, no attempt to make endorsements was made, upon motion of Burton P. Nuckols, who warned against hasty action.

Hugh Culbreath, typographical union delegate, however, announced that Local 430 of that international organization, on last Sunday afternoon had voted unanimously to support and work for one of its union members, Charles F. Towle, candidate for Miami city commission in Group 3.

Towle and one of his opponents, Attorney Morey Raymond, were the only Miami candidates to take the floor. Each merely acknowledged his introduction with a few words, stating he preferred waiting until all candidates were present to make their bids for votes.

Hialeah, however, was well represented. Vernon Ashley, member of the Eastern Air Lines Machinists Lodge 702 and candidate for mayor, spoke in behalf of his candidacy. He is vice-president of the Hialeah City Council who engineered the 40-hour work week for city employees and is leading proponent of a municipal pension plan.

In terse, informative bids for labor support in their quest of a seat on the Hialeah council, talks were made by Byrd V. Duke, attorney; Ed Ridolph, machinist union; Frances Benedetto, union barbershop proprietor; Councilman Jim Hosea Smith, incumbent seeking reelection, another airport machinist who supported the 40-hour work week; Paul A. Rindom, member of the CIO and master mechanic at Pan American airlines; Francis F. Perry, former organizer for the barber's union and currently in the real estate business; Joseph S. Komarmy, member of the electricians Local 349 and active union worker, and George Pfaffendorf, business manager of the Meatcutters Local 657 who last September gave South Florida the best Labor Day parade in its history as chairman of the Central Labor Union entertainment committee.

Andrew Elefante, of Barbers Local 278, candidate for trustee of the School board, explained that he was reluctant to speak in his own behalf inasmuch as the qualifying deadline in that race was November 8 and he did not know whom he will oppose in the balloting.

Applause greeted announcement by Nate Goldy, secretary of the Plumbers Local 519, that the membership had voted voluntarily to contribute $1 each toward defraying the expenses of the LLPE in disseminating political education among union workers. A number of delegates present stated they would recommend similar action by their locals.

It was announced that the regular winter schedule of LLPE meetings, every second Tuesday, would be resumed with the next session to be held Monday, October 17th in electricians building. All members of organized labor are invited to attend the public phase of these meetings, which start promptly at 8 p.m.
