GLASGOW, Scotland, (AP) The Duke of Edinburgh's helicopter made a forced landing in a field Wednesday and kept Queen Elizabeth II waiting anxiously for 20 minutes.
When he finally caught up later with his wife, while she was visiting a factory, she was visibly relieved, but pretended impatience.
"What in the world happened to you?" she asked.
"Unavoidably detained, my dear," the Duke explained with a smile.
The Duke's helicopter. with an RAF pilot at the controls, dropped out of misty sky and landed in a football field at Bathgate 30 miles away from where he was supposed to meet the Queen, waiting in the royal train at Uddingston, just outside Glasgow.
Visibility over the field was near zero.
The train waited but no helicopter landed at the field alongside the track. Frantic police calls went out to all stations along his flight path.
The air-minded Duke was found safe. He had landed outside Edinburgh shortly after taking off from Turnhouse airport.
The Duke sent a message to the Queen saying he would complete the journey in a police car.
