Extract from the Journal of Capt. W. D. Doak's, who arrived at Cape May, Sept. 8, 1797.

"I sailed from New-York on the 9th of Aug. in the sloop Adventure, bound to St. Bartholomews. I continued on my voyage with various winds, and some trifling occurrences, until the 22d, at 5 o'clock A. M. when I saw a sail to windward,— bearing down upon me. At 8 o'clock he fired a gun over the sloop and at half past 8, came alongside in lat. 31, 9, long. 62, 39, and proved to be the French sloop Jambard, from Point-Petre, Guadaloupe, mounting 14 guns, commanded by Capt. Titt, who hoisted out his boat and ordered me on board his vessel with my papers. On my going on board they damned me for an Englishman, and said my vessel was French and now under English colours; after examining my papers, which proved her to be American property and bound to St. Bartholomews, I requested to go on board my vessel, which was denied. Shortly after sent guns on board with a quantity of powder, and told me that he intended my sloop for a tender to his vessel, and said his intentions were to be on the coast of America. During this conversation, a sail appeared in sight, which they gave chase to, and at half-past 4, P. M. came up with the brig Fame, of Lamberton, James Izatt, master, out 34 days from Madeira, to New-York. The master came on board with his papers, which after being examined, he was detained that night; during which several of the privateer's men came over us with drawn daggers. On the morning of the 23d, Capt. Izatt was suffered to depart, after obliging him to take on board his vessel, part of the crews of two vessels they had captured, with my people, a passenger and myself, detaining the whole of my papers, together with the passenger, not suffering me even to take the log-book.

The morning of the 28th we were boarded by the British frigate Thalia, who treated us all very politely, and informed that the brig in co. was their prize. She was from the Havannah, bound to Cadiz, laden with dollars, indigo and hides—and at meridian of the 8th Sept. arrived at Cape-May in the above brig, she being in distress, but all hands in good health. Cape-May, Sept. 9, '97."
