What is this article about?

An express messenger from Fort Pitt to Sandusky was murdered by Indians about 45 miles from the fort, his head displayed on a pole; his companion likely captured. This suggests the Indians' negotiation at Presque Isle was a delaying tactic to protect their families and avoid late-season attacks.

Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Philadelphia.

Letters from Fort Pitt, of the 16th of September, bring Advice, That an Express that set out from Fort Pitt, with Dispatches to Sandusky, in Answer to Letters sent with Advice of the late Negotiation at Presque Isle, was discovered, about 45 Miles from hence, to have been murdered by the Indians, and his Head stuck upon a Pole in the middle of the Road: It is supposed, that a Man who accompanied him is carried off by the Indians. From hence it's very apparent, that the Design of these Villains has been to over reach and impose upon us in the late Negotiation, by gaining Time to dispose of their Wives and Children out of our Reach, should they be attacked, and endeavouring to make it so late in the Season, that no effective Operations can be carried on against them.
