Martinsburg, W. Va. April 14.
Returning here today from a 10 day trip into the southwestern part of the state in the interest of his candidacy for the Republican nomination for United States Senate at the May 14th primary, Judge Decatur H. Rodgers, of this (the 23rd) judicial circuit, said he had found a substantial registration swing from the Democratic to the Republican column indicative of the general trend for the primary and that he had been given much encouragement by leaders and workers in his own campaign.
He formally filed for the Senatorial office Tuesday.
His statement issued here today charged "our affairs are controlled from the desks of the bureaucrats at Washington. Congress and the courts have surrendered to the Executive their constitutional functions. Local self-government is almost destroyed. We are being governed by men, not by laws. This is the European, not the American way. The American people must decide now whether or not to continue the direction in which they are going."
Touching on foreign policy, he expressed this conviction: "I do not believe that our 'first line of defense is on the Rhine.' I do not believe that we must help the allies with 'more than words and less than war.' America, and all for which it stands, must be defended, even with the blood of its sons, but America and its democracy must be saved at home."
