Re-direction of the school curriculum was discussed for the local teachers' institute by Miss Helen Heffernan, chief of the division of elementary education and rural schools, at the session Monday night in the Holtville Chestnut street auditorium.
Miss Heffernan explained the work of the state wide committee on the scope and sequence of the curriculum, its activities being devoted to a revision of the curriculum and extending from the kindergarten through the colleges and universities.
C. B. Collins, county superintendent, presided and the Holtville elementary school orchestra and glee clubs provided a program of music and dancing. Fred L. Goode, music instructor, was in charge.
Prior to the institute Miss Heffernan was honor guest at a dinner sponsored by the Imperial Valley Principals association in the Methodist church. Miss Heffernan spoke to this group on the importance of the principal's position, emphasizing that he must consider the group of children the school serves, the kind of society in which the school exists and the special needs of that community in planning his program.
Monday Miss Heffernan conducted six different conferences, meeting in the afternoon with the El Centro elementary teachers to discuss factors to be considered in planning a unit of work.
Tuesday morning she held special conferences and that afternoon was to address the annual meeting of county school trustees at Wilson school at which Mrs. Florence C. Porter, member of the state board of education and secretary of the California school trustees' association, was to speak also.
