Full Text

The public will be glad to learn that the
Thompson burlesque troupe have gone; but
they will sincerely regret that the other
party to the recent disgraceful fight has not
also gone. For if the language used by
the principals in the affair is any criterion
of their characters, the newspaper termagant
is certainly the foulest bawd of the lot.
Not only have his columns reeked with dirt,
but his mouth has not opened to give expression
to his thoughts that he has not
vomited forth oaths and putridity in equal
measure.
This the members of the Thompson
troupe, of whatever else they may have
been guilty, have certainly not indulged
themselves in. So far as the verbal literature
of this controversy goes, then, the
party styled by their antagonist as prostitutes
have certainly come off with the cleanest
record.
Enough has been shown to elicit the fact
that the basis of the attack of the Times upon
this particular troupe is as usual, a mere
personal difference with the proprietors of
Opera House in regard to a matter of advertising,
or a still smaller matter of individual
exaction met by managerial veto.
The cloak in which the affair has been
dressed, was merely put on as a convenience.
It was only one of the disguises which this
Mephistopheles of journalism not unfrequently
takes to wreak his vengeance upon
whomsoever dares to balk even so much as
his individual whims.
We purpose to champion the cause of
neither of the parties to the Times-Thompson
scandal; but we wish it to be understood
that a bawd is a bawd, regardless of sex or
position; and that the passions, the language,
and the action of the journalistic
party to this controversy demonstrate
clearly enough that the epithets he has
heaped with such persistent foulness upon
the defenseless heads of the troupe of burlesquers,
whom he has at last driven with
baleful malignity from the city, are at least
not alone entitled to the championship of outcasts.
We repeat our regret that the journalistic
bawd in this whole disreputable row did not
follow the objects of his persecution out of
reach, out of hearing, and out of reading by
the outraged public of Chicago.—Chicago
Post.
