Mr. Willard Saulsbury, a representative in the U. S. Senate for this State, requested us to mention him in our columns. It had not occurred to us that he was entitled to an earlier notice in our paper, but as he has made a special request of us to do so, we condescend to give him the benefit of the following dialogue between himself and our devil :
Last week, whilst printing the first number of our paper, the U. S. Senator (!), who was "slightly under the influence," stopped at our office and interrogated our devil as follows:
"Have you published your new paper yet?"
"Yes."
"Have you anything in it about me?"
"No."
"You can't publish a Black Republican paper without having me in it. You must put me in it, for I am a Democrat! Tell the people that I have stolen something, or broken into somebody's house!"
"Very well, we shall do so."
"Is your editor here"
"No."
"Who is the damned scoundrel?"
The devil, getting riled, says, "If you make use of such expressions here, we shall be obliged to notice you."
The Senator, walking off, continues, "By all means say something about me; but, remember, I am a United States Senator!"
Our devil thinks if such men as Saulsbury can fill a seat in the U. S. Senate, that he will aspire to that important position at the expiration of Mr. Saulsbury's term.
