Old Point, Va., Oct. 25.—Uncle Sam's newest battleship, the Texas, which is not only the largest dreadnaught in the American navy, but one that carries the most powerful battery of any warship afloat under any flag, has left the Atlantic fleet for the deep sea speed course off Rockland, Maine, for her builders' trial. The Texas did not, of course, take part in the recent target practice off the Virginia capes.
The battleship Idaho now carries the pennant for excellence in battery practice. In the recent battery practice she outdistanced all rivals. The Idaho's straight-shooting crew will all be transferred to the Texas on the completion of her builders' trial. Thus the Texas will become one of the most dangerous fighting ships in the navy.
Aside from the Texas, the most powerful ships now in Uncle Sam's navy are the dreadnaughts Wyoming and Arkansas. The battery of the Texas is 30 per cent more powerful than either of the others. It includes ten 14-inch guns.
In the recent target practice off the Virginia capes several members of the cabinet were interested spectators. It was their first taste of navy life.
