Full Text
On Thursday evening his Excellency President Monroe visited the Theatre. Mr. Cooper appeared in the arduous character of Macbeth; and played it better than we have ever before seen it performed. Boxes number two and three were appropriated for the President and his suit, who entered about the middle of the first act. The President's box was handsomely decorated with national standards, emblems, &c. a golden eagle supported a festoon at top, and the arms of the Union appeared on the front of the box below. On his entering the box, the audience rose up as by unanimous consent, and greeted him with long and reiterated huzzas, while the orchestra struck up several national airs, commencing with the President's March. His Excellency continued during the play, and through one act of the afterpiece, when he retired with his suit, amid the plaudits of an admiring audience.
While the President sat in his box, an Italian artist in the pit was busily employed in sketching a miniature likeness of his Excellency. The artist stood near the orchestra, and although the pit was so crowded that there was scarcely room to move his hand, we are informed that he succeeded to admiration, and those who have inspected the performance, pronounce it to be the most striking likeness that has yet appeared, of this illustrious personage.
