"Orange Blossom Classic" At Orlando Attracts Hundreds To Colorful Floridian Fairyland

GAINESVILLE, Fla.-(SNS)-The Atlanta Daily World Expeditionary Forces are moving out of this college town at the edge of dawn with Orlando as our destination. As we leave we get glimpses of white folk streaking here and there in machines bearing Kentucky license plates. The University of Florida meets the University of Kentucky here this afternoon.

The "Men in Orange" from Florida A. and M. College, a school romantically referred to as "Famcee" in the nation at large are already en route to Orlando where they are to enact the fifth installment of the "Orange Blossom Classic" in a dog fight with the celebrated Hampton "Pirates" from wealthy Hampton Institute in Virginia.

The game is not very important to the nation's as a whole but very, very important to Floridians--this because it brings big league football to the very core of the state for the first time.

Looking back at the Orange Blossom event since its start in 1933, Florida has engaged the following teams with these results:

Jacksonville

Orlando

Bill Bell has some backs. Tom Jones, Hank Butler, Captain Ingraham, Harris, Ramsey, Strachan and Monzo James, who loom as superior to the clan that is to represent the Virginians in three same department.

The Florida backs are great defensively. They are great offensively but I like their defensive qualities better and if James can play today I am not sure that Hampton will score.

teams will be found in the line.

Hampton has a backfield that smacks of big time dimensions but her line will be the difference.

Bell has worked with his line in extra portions of time since the Morris Brown game when Braxton Pope and Harmon scattered his primary department like 16-inch siege guns trained on a brick fortress.

Florida handled the McCants threat on her line over in South Carolina with dispatch but the Bell clan has had no real acid bath during November and may get cock-eyed when the Pirates start giving it to them St. Tinker Stadium -this afternoon

Many Dixie football monarchs are here in Florida today. Coach Abbott came down with O'Shields from Tuskegee and there will be many, many more on hand to get a first edition view of typical SIAC and CIAA football shooting away at each other

History Of The Classic

In 1933 "Shorty" Anderson was Florida's hero in handling Howard but "Red" Williams arched the placement from the Howard 29 that won the game.

Howard had a strong team but Verdell's boys failed at crucial moments.

In 1934 H. R. Jefferson marched into Florida with one of his typically efficient Virginia State "Trojan" casts and outplayed Florida by a mile in fundamental football but Bragg happened to have "Blue Dean" Everett on the Florida roster and needed none else. Everett stepped 66 yards for one score and slashed off tackle 7 yards for the other. "Shorty" Anderson again inserted his name in the records with a dive for the extra point to win the game. 13-12.

Florida outplayed Kean's Kentucky State clan in 1935 in all but three minutes. The Floridas took an early 9 point lead after Everett had contributed a sparkling 25 yard masterpiece and a 31 yard placement. Kendall, Hardin, "Big Bertha" Edwards, White and the others struck like sudden death in the second quarter and cavorted the length of the field on spot passes to score twice in two minutes. An intercepted pass gave the victors another tally in the last minute of the quarter. Florida completed 13 passes and amassed 9 first downs in the second half but there was no more scoring either way.

In 1936 it was Sam Taylor and his Prairie View Panthers who visited in Jacksonville and took Florida down. 6-0. This was mainly due to the fact that Sam had an All-American back, 215 pound Flowers, on his team. The Florida gang punished the big boy terrifically but he strong shouldered across the goal line one time before leaving the game.

Alonzo James caught a 30 yard pass from Tom Jones on the Prairie View 3 yard line but the Texans held three times before Florida fumbled on the fourth attempt.

The 1937 story will be written today. Florida still has a January first game to play at Houston, Texas. The Prairie View Panthers will be their opponents.
