The Providence Journal says—
"We have learned that a letter was received in this city yesterday, from Washington, stating that the committee of apportionment for Representatives, under the fifth census, have agreed upon a report in favor of fixing the ratio at 48,000."
This would give to New-Hampshire five Representatives, and leave a fraction of something over 29,000.
The aggregate representation of the States would be 237.
We have seen a tabular statement giving the number of representatives to each State, and the aggregate of all the States, under any ratio from 48 to 55,000 both inclusive, together with the fractions in each case to each State.
New-Hampshire will be entitled to five, provided the ratio is not fixed at a higher rate than fifty-three thousand; at which number the aggregate representation would be 214. Vermont will be entitled to five if the ratio is not fixed at a higher rate than 55,000. Massachusetts will be entitled to twelve at 48,000, and to 11 only if the ratio is to exceed 50,000.
