THE AWFUL COST.
Chairman Cannon, of the House Appropriations Committee, in discussing the expenditures authorized at the session of Congress just closed, says that of the total of over $709,000,000, $131,247.155 was "on account of or incident to the late war with Spain."
The war with Spain ended August 14. 1898-twenty-two months ago. The phrase "incident to" must almost wholly relate to the war we are waging in the Philippines, and gives some idea of what Mr. McKinley's present of twenty millions to Spain for a worthless title to a thousand worthless islands is going to cost the American taxpayer. If we get out of it under a quarter of a billion dollars we will do well.
McKinley and the Republican party ought to be defeated on this ground alone.
