INGENUITY OF WOMAN.

Not long since a woman with two children returned to her native place in Carmarthenshire, Wales, under very peculiar circumstances, after a voyage to Australia. It appears that the unfortunate creature possessed a little property in that country, and lived very comfortably in the absence of her husband, who was in Australia: but some time since he sent for her and the children to come out to him, which she did, after disposing of her little property to enable her to do so. On arriving in that distant country she met her husband, who was apparently very glad to see her. After depriving her of the little she possessed, he left her at a public house, informing her that he would return in a short time. The poor woman waited until a late hour, when she inquired whether she could be accommodated with a bed for herself and children. She was informed that she could not, but they would procure one for her. Strange to relate, she happened to obtain a lodging at her husband's house, who had been re-married in that country. Some time after going to bed, she was awoke by the noise of a man evidently the worse for liquor entering the house, when she heard him state: 'I have seen my Welsh wife and children, and I have taken all the money from her, so it is all right now, eh? Here they are; put them in the drawer with the others, and let us go to bed.' It was not till then that the poor woman began to surmise that her husband was re-married, and that he no doubt intended, when convenient, to deprive her and the children of life. She immediately resolved upon a 'bold step,' and holding a watchful ear to their movements, she heard them entering a room next to hers. Rising immediately from bed as soon as the door closed, she went noiselessly and saw what was going on inside, viz: the putting of the money into a certain drawer. Retiring and remaining awake for a couple of hours, until she knew by their loud breathing that they were fast in the arms of Morpheus, she cautiously entered the room and opened the drawer where her little money had been deposited, and decamped with the whole to her own room. In the morning she managed to leave unawares to him, and got back on board the ship she came out in, the master of which protected her, and took her back to England.
