Muffed Punt Upsets Game

New York, Dec. 6-AP-When California converted its own backward punt into an 85-yard touchdown run that knocked U.C.L.A. out of the Rose Bowl, coaches and writers participating in the Associated Press season-end poll agreed they had found the oddity of the football year.

California had the ball on its own 33. Left end Jack LeRond had been called back to punt but the slippery ball slithered off the side of his foot and went back over his head, bouncing to his own 15. His blocking back, quarterback Ed Welch, scooped up the ball and ran 45 yards to the U.C.L.A. 40 and lateralled to LeRond who went the rest of the way for the only score of a 6-0 game.
