By J. A. (JACK) JOHNSON
James W. Ford, National Vice Chairman of the Communist Party U. S. A., and former candidate for Vice President of the United States on the Communist ticket addressed a large and enthusiastic audience at the Moose Temple Saturday night.
Many Negroes who are not Communists, but who feel that any Negro who can win a United States Vice Presidential nomination on any man's ticket in this land of discrimination were on hand out of respect to Mr. Ford and the ideals for which he stands.
While Mr. Ford's political views, like those of all the rest of us are controversial, his summation of the progress of the war, of domestic and world economics, and post war planning necessities are sound. Mr. Ford urged Negroes to continue to affiliate themselves with labor unions, pointing out that during World War One, we have increased from a mere handful to more than seven hundred and fifty thousand today.
Mr. Carl Reeve, Administrative Secretary of the Northwest District Communist Party, speaking on the Communist Party and National Unity in an address preceding Mr. Ford, paid Mr. Ford a fine compliment, by pointing him out as a symbol of imperishable unity between Negroes and whites as far as the Communist Party is concerned. Mr. Ford's address preceeded the opening of the Northwest District Communist Convention, Sunday, May 7. A collection of $2,599.35 was raised by volunteer subscription in about 30 minutes, which isn't exactly hay, and which likewise reflects sincerity of purpose on the part of those who are interested in the party progress.
