A correspondent observes, that, having accidentally fallen into a miscellaneous company, on Tuesday last, some of whom had just perused the advertisement of SIGNOR FALCONI, he was highly entertained with the several remarks, of a serious, shrewd, and comic nature that took place. One observed, that the devil had forsaken the confines of Europe, and was to discover his cloven foot to a set of his chosen pupils that evening, at Corre's. Another said, with a sneer, that he was only a lick-penny slight-of-hand man, &c. &c. After long dialogues it was whispered, who would attend?—upon which, one averred, that he would not have any thing to do with the devil; another was anxious to see his grim majesty, if he was to be found, &c.—This interview greatly excited many curiosity, continues our correspondent, and I immediately procured a pit ticket, and attended at Mr. Corre's room, in the evening. Without tiring your readers, Mr. Printer, with a particular detail of the several feats which Signor Falconi performed, I shall only remark, that I was very agreeably, and surprisingly, disappointed. I found, that he was neither the devil nor a lick-penny slight-of-hand man,—but a profound student in those almost unexplored branches of natural philosophy which create wonder and surprise. The greater number of his feats appeared to be performed by the several powers of ATTRACTION, REPULSION, and vegetation, enforced by MAGNETISM and ELECTRICITY; all of which the common gad-about mountebanks are as ignorant of, as they are of the principles of perpetual motion.—Mr. Falconi has performed in several parts of Europe, and at the islands, with amazing success, and comes here highly recommended as a person of great natural ingenuity and acquired proficiency. It is most undoubted, that America has never before been visited by so extraordinary a personage; and, to say nothing of the partial good his visit may be productive of, surely to encourage his exhibition by their patronage cannot redound otherwise than to the honor of the citizens of New-York. His performances, on Tuesday evening, though merely his introduction, were universally applauded.
