Discriminating Against
People Of Hawaii
WASHINGTON, (AP)
Senate Republican leader William F. Knowland Tuesday accused the Senate Democratic leadership of "rank discrimination" against Hawaii for so far failing to schedule debate on Hawaii statehood legislation.
He made the accusation at the White House after he and other GOP congressional leaders conferred.
It was their regular Eisenhower. It was their regular weekly discussion of legislative matters.
Knowland spoke out as the Senate continued debate on House-passed legislation to make Alaska a state.
Replying to a question he predicted the Senate will pass that bill without amendment.
The Californian reiterated he intends to oppose any effort to tie the Alaska and Hawaii statehood measures together in one bill.
Such a consolidation, Knowland said, probably would have the effect of killing statehood for both territories.
The senator said it apparently is the present intention of Senate Democratic leaders to give the Senate no opportunity at this session to vote on Hawaii. He called that "rank discrimination" against the people of Hawaii.
"Hawaii is equally entitled to statehood with Alaska."
