ENOQUIRER

RICHMOND:

SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 1804.

We had no mail farther north than Fredericksburg—by Thursday's stage. Yesterday's mail brought no late intelligence from Europe. The only articles worthy of immediate publication, relate to East India affairs. We shall reserve the remaining news, which came by this ship Adventure, for our next paper.

The last number of ALCIBIADES is this day presented to the public. No doubt, different opinions will be formed on the propriety of his opinion and the conclusiveness of his reasoning. The Editor believes that his readers will entertain but one opinion respecting the perspicuity and elegance of the Essay. His comparison between the domestic and exalted virtues, appears particularly accurate and eminently striking.

No. 6. communicated the intelligence of the capture of Goree (a small island on the coast of Africa) by a French squadron: It appears that it was retaken on the 9th March, by the British frigate Inconstant, capt. Dixon, of 36 guns, and a garrison of 250 men left to defend the place.

In one of our late Charleston newspapers, we observe 367 Congo, 357 Angola, and 148 Windward Coast negroes, lately arrived there, advertised for sale.

"A VIRGINIAN" No. II. is postponed.

On Tuesday last, Mr. Bridewell moved in the Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, that a committee be appointed to bring in a resolve for Districting the Commonwealth for the choice of Electors of a President and Vice-President of the United States. The motion was seconded by Mr. Hill, & Thursday, at 11 o'clock, assigned for taking it into consideration.

The British have seven ships of the line, blockading 6 French and one Dutch ship of the line in Ferrol and Corunna.
