Yesterday was signalized in this town by the formal inauguration of the Spartanburg Female College. At an early hour the Church was filled with a large audience of ladies and gentlemen, notwithstanding the inauspicious character of the weather from rain.
About one o'clock the President of the Board of Trustees, Simpson Bobo, esq., conducted to the platform William Gilmore Simms, LL. D., who had kindly consented to deliver the opening address. After the reading of a Psalm and the offering of a dedicatory prayer by Rev. Dr. Wightman, President of Wofford College, President Tucker introduced to the assembly Dr. Simms, who then pronounced a discourse on the theme of education which held in rapturous enthralment every person present.
It was a production of great brilliancy of illustration, and enforced the importance and necessity of education in connection with religion in so eloquent and earnest a manner, as to silence the mere thought of skepticism. No act of the Trustees or Faculty could better subserve the cause of education, or signalize the opening of this College, than the publication of Dr Simms' admirable address, and we hope it will be done.
At the close of the address, which was warmly applauded, Mr. Bobo, as chairman of the Trustees, in a few neat and pertinent remarks pointing out the nature of the duties he had to discharge, as detailed by the oration to which they had been listening, formally committed the College and its interests into the hands of President J. Wofford Tucker, and the Faculty under him. Mr. Tucker responded briefly, accepted the trust, and pledged to the discharge of it a complete and perfect devotion of time and talents. The benediction was pronounced by Dr. Wightman, and the audience dismissed.
The intervals of exercise were enlivened by the instrumental performances of the Tiger Brass Band.—Carolina Spartan.
