PITTSBURGH, June 1.

A gentleman at St. Louis on the Mississippi, writes to his friend in this town, under date of May 5th, 1804, that Capt. Lewis who had been sent by the President of the United States to explore the newly acquired territory of Louisiana, was at that place, and intended leaving it in a few days on his return to the city of Washington, accompanied by 20 Indian Chiefs.

The letter does not mention the distance Capt. Lewis had been from that place, but we presume he was prevented from proceeding by the nations of Indians to whom the Chiefs belong that are accompanying him to visit the President.
