I suppose the difference between me and the federal governor of New Hampshire, in political matters, arises from the different periods of finishing our educations. We both belonged to the Washington school: but I finished my education in that school, when Washington was commander in chief of the armies of the United States, when our employment was to drive alien murderers from our land, that were invited here by native Americans to murder us as rebels for offering to plead for our own rights and privileges, when his motto was virtutem aut mortem. I suppose the governor received the first whig polish of his education, when John Adams was President of the college: when a standing army was raised and stationed in the heart of the country, whose employment was to drive aliens away, that fled here for an asylum from slavery; when a sedition law was made, to punish those who dared to speak of their rights, or opposed his reign.
Fellow citizens! I warn you to take Washington for your example, and learn of him; you see a true scholar of his in the great Jefferson... If a foreign nation invade you, unite and repel them: if your internal enemies flatter you to take on the yoke, or swallow the gag, or dissolve the Union, or raise jealousies in the state against another, give them an "indignant frown," and spurn them from your councils. Certain natives of your own country were always your worst enemies; they are still among you; they were despised by all nations, even the British army despised them. Since the return of these murderers into your bosom, they have been working in the line of secret friends, which are more to be dreaded than open enemies. But now they are out from their lurking holes; you have nothing to fear but your own negligence. You must keep a vigilant eye, lest they burrow again.
You are at peace with all nations, except Tripoli, old tories, apostate whigs and Robinson and Barruel's trumpeters; but their Liliputian ties are broken there is no fear of their rising; the British Lion is terrified at the crowing of the cock on the lilly of France, and is doubly fortifying his den; Helians, can no more be had for breastworks: the Indians are turned Republicans. The foes of your freedom have no means but deception to set you to fighting one another and to enslave you.
Our excellent President is re-elected, to pursue, for another four years, his mild course of justice and humanity, to prefer honorable negotiation to war, and economy to profusion. May he never be moved by the crowing of the cock, the roaring of lions, the bellowing of bulls, the braying of asses the howling of wolves nor the barking of puppies
