Full Text

We rejoice to find in Shakespeare the original Mrs. Caudle. So says the Rochester American, as if anything could be scraped up now-a-days that had not previously broken cover in Shakespeare. Antipholus is driven mad. The Abbess and his wife Adriana discourse in the selected cause that upset his reason.

Abbess.--You should for that have reprehended him.

Adriana.-Why so I did.

Abb.-Aye, but not rough enough.

Adr.-As roughly as my modesty would let me.

Abb.-Haply in private-

Adr.-And in assemblies too.

Abb.-Aye, but not enough.

Adr.-It was the copy of our conference,
In bed he slept not for my urging it;
At board he fed not for my urging it;
Alone it was the subject of my theme.
In company I often glanced at it;
Still did I tell him it was vile and bad.

The Abbess seems to have been a woman of sense, and thus she lays it down :

And therefore came it, that the man was mad.
It seems his sleeps were hindered by thy railings;
And thereof comes it that his head is light.
In life preserving rest
To be disturbed, would mad a man or beast.

Canedu et mirrors.
