On Ohio Turnpike
Columbus, Ohio.-(ANP)-The chairman of the Ohio Turnpike Commission has announced the adoption of a policy not to publicize any place of public accommodation along the turnpike which indulges in racial discrimination.
Chairman James W. Shocknessy in a letter to Hugh W. Manchester, attorney for the Youngstown Motel and Restaurant Association said the commission has under study plans to advertise locations where shelter for the night may be obtained.
This was a departure from a previously announced policy of not allowing commercial advertising of any nature along the turnpike.
"I am impelled to advise you that the commission will not enter into any negotiations envisioning its announcing the location of any accommodation for the night wherein discrimination as to race is either the rule or practice," the letter said.
Shocknessy concluded: "It is the hope of the Ohio Turnpike Commission that all human beings, of whatever race, will use the Ohio Turnpike and may enter it with the assurance that if the night descends upon them during their travels . . . they may be assured of proper and adequate shelter irrespective of race."
