Full Text

We published, lately, a communication on the subject of Boston influence, which was written, evidently for the purpose of ridiculing certain "inordinate efforts to excite unmerited odium against the people of Boston." To inform our readers that the remarks were ironical, would, we supposed, be an insult to their understanding. To caution them against believing our correspondent to be in earnest, when he spoke of the wicked plot to convert the House of Correction into a State Prison, would, we imagine, have appeared somewhat ludicrous. And yet the Salem Gazette speaks of "communications in the Worcester papers," in a manner that leads to the inference that our mischievous correspondent needed an interpreter. The Springfield Federalist, also, has evidently been led into a misapprehension for which we can account only upon the supposition, that the remarks of our correspondent were hastily read and hastily commented on.

[From the Springfield Federalist.]

Boston Influence.—The Worcester Spy contains an article, fraught with the most dire suspicions.—It has been contemplated, that the State should purchase the Worcester House of Correction, to be used for the confinement of young convicts and first offenders, whose punishment would otherwise be confinement in the State's Prison or common Gaols.—The article referred to, asserts, that this measure is started by Boston people, and its object is to send into Worcester, a band of the most desperate malefactors.

If we have been rightly informed, the warmest friends of this plan are to be found in "the Heart of the Commonwealth."
