Full Text
The opening of the Jewish Assembly at Paris took place upon a Saturday, the day on which the Jewish law forbids every kind of employment. This, no doubt, was done designedly. Bonaparte delights in outraging all ancient prejudices and habits.—We have little doubt that he intends to force the Jews to change their day of Sabbath. The speech with which the Assembly was opened by the Imperial Commissioners, is remarkable for nothing but its insolence and impiety. In the height and excess of their impious zeal, they dare to attribute to their idol, one of the attributes of the Almighty, the attribute of Omniscience. Our readers will easily collect from the questions proposed to the Jews, that Bonaparte means to make the Jews liable to the laws of Conscription.—He treads upon tender ground—let him beware—the religious propensities and attachment of men were never outraged with impunity—he has yet to learn, perhaps, the lengths to which religious fanaticism will carry the human heart.
