Young Man Caught
In Burglary
Attempt Slain
By Officer

Robert Gray, youthful Negro
man was shot to death by Officer
S. D. Byrd, of the City Police
department during a chase which
took place when Gray was caught
breaking into a Lamar Street
sporting goods store shortly after
midnight Sunday night.

According to reports the chase
lasted until Gray was confronted
by Officer Byrd in the rear of the
Mississippi School Supply Company
on South Street. Gray is
reported to have brandished a gun
in the face of the officer, who
shot one time, the bullet striking
Gray between the eyes killing
him instantly.

A number of persons, including
several Negroes, saw Gray as he
fled from the store.

Robert Gray, a youthful Negro man, was caught breaking into a Lamar Street sporting goods store and fled. Officer S. D. Byrd chased him to the rear of the Mississippi School Supply Company on South Street, where Gray brandished a gun. The officer shot Gray between the eyes, killing him instantly. Several witnesses saw the events.
