The bill introduced by Mr. Ratliff, of Hinds, granting a lease of twenty years to the Mississippi Industrial Exposition Company, of lands lying East of the old capitol, met with severe treatment at the hands of the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The committee amended the original bill making the lease ten instead of twenty years. When it was called up Mr. Mitchell of Lee and Itawamba moved to amend by inserting 'two' instead of 'ten.' This amendment was adopted, practically killing the bill. Mr. Ross, however, hastened matters by moving to indefinitely postpone action and his motion prevailed. Mr. Ratliff entered a motion to reconsider, and it is believed the bill will fare better when it comes up again.
The above is from our highly esteemed friend the Jackson Clarion Ledger but it certainly does not reflect the character of that splendid paper. 'Hard on Jackson!' Nothing was ever too hard on Jackson except the damnable grub and accommodations given people who are forced occasionally to visit the place. What right has Jackson to the old state capitol or the grounds adjacent belonging to the state? The people of Jackson ought to learn to buy and pay for what they need and must have and quit BEGGING other people for assistance for their support. The people of Mississippi outside of Jackson have been very, very good to the capital city but it is evident that the beneficiaries are nor ever would be satisfied.
