Capt. James Allen received Letters of Marque and Reprisals from the Honourable Governor to go against the Spaniards and took command of the Sloop Revenge, a new vessel owned by Capt. John Browne of Newport, mounted with ten Carriage Guns and ten Swivels, manned by 76 stout able men mostly sailors, well-equipped with small arms, ammunition, and necessaries, sailing on a cruise for the West-Indies.
