Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Paris, April 6.

As it may happen that the Court of Spain will not renew the Asiento Treaty with the English South Sea Company, several rich French Merchants seem to have a Design to propose to the Catholick King to grant them Permission to transport to the Spanish Colonies in America the same Number of Negroes which that Company sends thither, and upon the same Conditions.

Those Merchants are chiefly of Nantes and St. Malo.

They are assur'd of being strongly recommended to his Catholick Majesty by this Court; and it is said, that if the Negro Trade is granted them, the Spanish Court will also give them Power to stop, indiscriminately, on the Coasts of Mexico, all the Foreign Vessels they can catch carrying on an illicit Trade. The Merchants of this Kingdom earnestly wish that this Regulation may take Place, because it will be of vast Advantage to the Commerce of the Galleons and the Flotilla, in which the French Nation has the greatest Share.
