ROBERT W. ROBERTS.

This individual is one of the candidates for Congress on the regularly nominated ticket of the Repudiators. A position more inconsistent and discreditable, than the one occupied by this aspirant for a seat in Congress, we can scarcely imagine. He seems so well convinced of it himself, that he does not venture out before the people; at least we have not heard of his doing so. But possibly this reluctance to appear before the public may proceed from the extreme modesty of the gentleman; if this be the cause of his keeping himself so secluded, we are requested to say that doubtless his repudiating brethren in this section of the State would be pleased to see him and, if he will afford an old gentleman an opportunity of practicing upon him, it will give him much pleasure to administer to him a dose so stimulating to his faculties, that it will either bring him to his senses or it will forever hermetically seal his mouth. He promises to give him a kind of patent medicine that will either kill or cure this Repudiator.

That the public may form some conception of the difficulties, which this distinguished member of the Repudiating corps finds in his way in coming before the people on an avowed advocate of this doctrine, we will mention a few incidents in his political life, which will enable them to appreciate the delicacy of his situation and the sacrifice of feeling which he encounters in devoting himself to this noble cause.—

When the Union Bank charter came a second time before the legislature of this State for the final election, which was necessary to give validity to the measure, this Mr. Robert W. Roberts was a member of that body, and voted for the passage of the act of incorporation, together with the Supplemental Charter, the unconstitutionality of which the repudiators contend makes the Union Bank bonds null and void.

This same Robert W. Roberts was a member of the committee appointed to examine into the sale of the bonds, in January 1839, and concurred in the Report approving of the sale. The committee not only reported that the sale of five millions of the bonds had been effected in accordance with the charter, but they took pains to pay a high compliment upon the commissioners, who had effected it. The following is an extract from this report:

"Contrary, however, to the expectation of every one familiar with the distressed condition of the stock market, a negotiation of five millions of the bonds was effected by the commissioners, highly advantageous to the State and the bank, and in accordance with the injunctions of the charter, requiring them to be sold at par value. A sale reflecting the highest credit upon the commissioners themselves, and bringing timely aid to an embarrassed community."

In addition to these circumstances in the political history of this individual in connection with the Union Bank, we will mention another fact, which carries with it no little weight in shewing what were the opinions he formerly hold on this subject. Robert W. Roberts borrowed as principal from the Union Bank $10,000 00, his liability as endorser was $19,809.68, his total liability was $29,809 68. He at this time owes independent of his liability as endorser, $10,402 00 with the accumulated interest upon it.
