Full Text

Dreadful Accident.—On Tuesday morning, at eight o'clock, a young woman named Nancy Whitman, employed at D. Hellogg's cotton factory, about one mile north of this city, after detaching a band appertaining to the machinery, passing under shaft to gain her stand here, was caught by the right hand and the shrinking of a nerve, was whirled round at the rate of one hundred and thirty-five revolutions in a minute. The machinery was stopped as soon as possible. The sufferer was taken up in a senseless state, having received compound fractures of the arm above the elbow, and ankle, the bone protruding through the skin at each fracture; a piece of the skin torn from the leg, and otherwise much bruised. Her legs continuing in contact with the stove pipe, causing much machine and door, at each revolution. That the sufferer escaped with life, is truly wonderful.—

Since writing the above, we learn that from present appearances, the patient is likely to recover.—Schenectady Democrat.
