From the TIME PIECE:
To pour instruction on the mind, is of great importance; and of some value in a political sense. It will have a tendency to establish a peaceable disposition of mind among neighbors. It will prevent men from becoming dupes to a party, and will finally destroy party spirit. It will induce mankind to open their ears, and talk less. Without ferocity the good of our country will predominate, or be forever uppermost, and stand as a barrier against evils contrived by the wicked, eternal enemies to the rights of man.
Hence the question arises, at what period of life is human nature most pliable and apt to receive, to imbibe, to give nourishment to useful instruction?
I suppose that for obvious reasons, the time from the age of twelve to fourteen or fifteen years, requires careful management. This period of life is of immense value. A lad may be employed in learning the languages, without bestowing all his time on them, and will probably make the more progress from not being too much driven. With these studies let them be careful to mingle at times; geography and history, with short instructive lessons on the necessity of endeavoring to add to the general good and happiness of mankind, and the various leadings to this happy state.
