Full Text

Extract of a letter from an officer of rank at New Orleans, to his correspondent in Boston, dated September 13.

"The summer has been uncommonly warm, this season one of the most sickly that has been for many years. This arises from the great number of strangers who have come to this country. It is worthy of remark, and there has been but one or two instances of the fever having attacked persons who have resided in the city one year.

"I have lost some valuable soldiers but not so many as probably is reported --The whole number of deaths among the troops since my arrival, (the first of June last) does not exceed fifty. This, considering the great number who have been sick, and when compared with the mortality among strangers of a different description cannot be thought a very great loss. Great it is, however to us, to whom the lives of our men are precious."
