The Marriage of Frank Boskowitz and His Helen McCabe. The Bride renounces the Catholic Faith and becomes a Jewess.

All of our readers know Frank Boskowitz. Many of them knew Miss McCabe, now his wife. The town was yesterday electrified by reading in Finlay's San Francisco Chronicle an account of Miss McCabe's renunciation of her Catholic faith, her formal and solemn admission into the Jewish Church, and her investiture with the Hebraic name of Leah, the daughter of Abraham the Patriarch. The Chronicle's reporter makes the mistake of calling her Miss McGotfey; but the identity is unmistakable, and that Miss McCabe renounced the faith of her fathers to marry him and thereafter did become Frank Boskowitz's wife there is no room for doubt.

This lady is a niece of Mr. Peter Cavanagh of this city; and since her early girlhood she has made his house her home. For some years past she has been living here and working at her trade of dressmaking. Her abandonment of the creed and observances to which she has been brought up and her determined renunciation of a belief in the Christian religion exhibit a wonderful degree of devotion to her husband.

The account states that she, in accordance with the rites of the Jewish Church, made three several applications for admission into that church before her prayer was granted. Twice her petition was rejected. Her confession of faith was publicly made to a Jewish Rabbi; she was then baptized; then blessed, and then awarded her certificate of fellowship in the Jewish congregation. This, on Thursday afternoon. On Thursday night these twain were married by the same Rabbi who received her into the church. Her baptism was conducted by holy women, apart from any men, she being entirely disrobed before submitting to the ceremony which is done by immersing the nude person in pure water.

Of course the Cavanagh family are greatly surprised and grieved by this departure of their relative from their common faith.

The mention of another fact in connection with this abbreviated account of "Bosco's" marriage is not out of order. The firm in which this new-made bridegroom is a partner is Stern & Boskowitz, clothing merchants, Carson street. Carson City. Some years ago, Mr. Stern who is also a Jew by birth, married Miss Fern, a lady of Irish parentage and a strict Catholic. In this case there was anything but a renunciation of her religious views upon the part of the bride; but, on the contrary, she adhered to her creed and still does adhere to the same, so strictly, indeed, that their children, of whom there are two or three or more, have all been baptized in the Catholic faith. So that the firm of Stern & Boskowitz is comprised of two gentlemen of Jewish pedigree whose marital relations present the rather remarkable conditions of a person of Jewish birth waiving his predilections in matters of race and religion to marry a Catholic, and a Catholic renouncing her religion to marry a Jew. We doubt if two more notable cases of a compromise of religion in favor of the claims of affection and matrimony can be instanced.
