To Pay for Schools

Durant Bill Provides That Cities and Towns Having State Schools Must Assist in Their Support.

Cities and towns which have state educational institutions and which maintain no high school will be compelled to assist in maintenance of the state schools, in accordance with a bill by Durant which passed in the house subcommittee of the whole this morning.

Under the terms such town pays for support of the state institution in proportion to the number of pupils it has in the school and the cost of maintaining each student in the school. The object of the bill is to prevent the necessity of the state through general taxation, furnishing high school facilities to towns having normal schools and other state institutions where a large attendance comes from the town where the institution is located.
