Full Text

We barely mentioned in our last, the passage through our city, of about 400 United States troops. They composed the 2d regiment of artillery, commanded by Lieut. Col. Crane, destined for the Northern frontier, via Maysville, Portsmouth, Cleveland, &c. The regiment left Florida in June, where it had been in service since the commencement of Indian hostilities; and the effect of the Florida climate in producing disease, had not been entirely removed, which was apparent in their appearance, although their appearance was martial. The names of the officers, as communicated to us, are Capt. F. Green—Lieuts. Duncan, Bransford, Luther, Conkling, Morgan, Daniels, Allen, Arnold, Townsend, Pratt, Sedgwick and Brown—and Capt. Peyton of the Q. M. department.

Reflecting that this body of veterans had been in the service of the U. States, doing battle in defence of our women and children, against a hostile foe who knows no mercy, we were vexed and mortified at the annunciation of their arrival, some of our prints. To justly appreciate them, we refer our readers to the accounts of the late massacres, which will be found in another part of this paper.
