The national debt of America is said to be a source of uneasiness, and even distress, to some of our states. Can it be possible says a correspondent, that the sum of 9,000,000l. sterling (which is the whole amount of our debt) should thus distress 2,500,000 inhabitants? A simple problem in arithmetical division will demonstrate, that FOUR POUNDS sterling from each of the individuals would amount to 1,000,000l. more money than this great and important debt. Four pounds per poll appears to be a trifling sum; and, on an average, there is not a family but lays out more money in superfluous foreign decorations and luxuries.
What does this urge!--That that infatuation which has laid government prostrate--that has thrown republics into anarchy--that has caused thousands of innocents to be put to the sword--and that inverts religion, order and virtue, has taken fast hold of, and corrupted our imaginations! Oh Americans! whither will this lead you? to anarchy! And finally, to the will of a foreign or some other MASTER! Is this what we have been fighting for? --Oh, rather, let us "strip off all the equipage of pride," and pay our just our sacred debts, the appropriation of which was, the purchase of our FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE!--Expences accumulate in proportion to the delay, just as the sinner's offences enhance until he adopt his long intended plan of reformation to a moral life -and if you are not an age, the executioner will receive his orders ere your dying speech be composed, in which you will doubtless most vehemently cry out-- (O ye sister nations! take warning by my fate! tread not in my foot steps, lest ye likewise thus ignominiously perish for false usury, and pocketing the fifty shekels, which ought to have been returned with interest!--Let us not adopt the ridiculous idea, that true whiggism consists in perpetual resistance! or that any government ought to be opposed so long as those at helm pursue such mea-sures as are apparently calculated to render us honor-able and happy!--This last, it is presumed, is the present case with America-if so, he who opposes it is a TRAITOR, and ought to be treated as such! -and if not so, the man who is privy to any abuse of power is equally culpable as an enemy to his country.
