Full Text

Gen. Butler's Farewell.—The Parthian arrow which General Butler aimed at General Grant, in the farewell address to his troops, reveals a little of the bitterness there is between them. It now appears that the order for his removal was the result of an interview between Secretary Stanton and the lieutenant general; and that Butler's withdrawal of his troops from the attack on Fort Fisher was the immediate occasion. Some of the friends of Gen. Butler desire to give a political aspect to his reverse of fortune. But it is absurd to suppose that Gen. Grant, whose wish has the force of law in the making and unmaking of his subordinates, could have any share in the political intrigues with which narrow minded men labor to build up their fortunes at the expense of their neighbors.
