Mr. Editor:
Through the columns of your paper I wish to draw the attention of the Whig party of Carroll county, to the approaching Convention to be held at Carrollton, on Wednesday the 31st August inst., of the importance of the approaching election. It is not my purpose to speak at this time, other than to remind our Whig friends, that there is 1st. The question of the currency, of shall we have a well regulated Banking system in Ohio, or shall we return to a metallic currency; as indicated by the address and resolutions adopted at the late Young Men's "Locofoco convention at Columbus? 2d. Shall we elect a Legislature that will retain Wm. Allen in the United States Senate for the next six years! 3d. Shall we elect a Legislature who will continue Samuel Medury (of quasi quire memory) State Printer for the next three years? 4th. Shall we elect a Legislature that will go in for passing resolutions to favor the pauper labor of Europe, instead of the free labor of our own country? To those who answer the above questions with the monosyllable, YES! I have nothing to say. They are already sunk in the slough of Locofocism beyond the hope of redemption: but to those who recognize the Whig principles of 1840 as the rock on which the national prosperity must rest, I make the appeal. Then, fellow-citizens, come up on the 31st and build up a ticket that will meet the approbation of a majority of yourselves. Those townships which lie distant from the county seat might hold public meetings before the convention, and send delegates to represent them. Let a spirit of patriotism, and a liberality of sentiment, prevail among those engaged in a common cause, burying all differences about men. Every thing for principle—for men nothing It only of feeling, and concert in action can be obtained, you will elect that sterling patriot and gifted Whig "Tom Corwin" Governor of Ohio, over Wilson Shannon. You can, if you are united and vigilant, elect two members to the House of Representatives from Carroll and Jefferson counties. You can defeat the election of Wm. Allen, to the Senate of the United States, a place which he obtained by iniquity and corruption In short, you can drive that wholesale liar, and abominable slanderer of General Harrison to his proper level—an ignominious and unenviable obscurity—And where is the Harrison man who took part in the conflict of 1840, who will not be up and doing? You can permanently adjust the vexed question of Banks, two thirds of whose charters expire on the first of January, 1843—come one, come all! Remember that “ETERNAL VIGILANCE IS THE PRICE OF LIBERTY."
You may hear of me hereafter if time permits.
